In a village above the Mzimvubu River, seventeen-year-old Ayanda dreams of a fire that leaves no ash. Her grandmother calls it a gift. The village calls it a curse. When the flames start appearing while she's awake, Ayanda has seven nights to learn what the ancestors are asking of her.
